The Question
Completely identify these two reliefs, indicating
what type of architectural sculpture each one is, what building each is
from, and where on the building each one was. Also give the location
(i.e. the place name) of each building, and provide each building's period,
dates and artistic style. Next, completely identify each relief,
indicating who all the characters are, and what their surviving and restorable
attributes are. Describe the specific actions of all the characters.
Next, compare and contrast the two reliefs in terms of their compositions.
Which relief do you think has a more dynamic composition and more dynamic
action, and why have you arrived at this conclusion? Then compare
and contrast the heroes in the two reliefs. What state of mind do
you think each hero exhibits, and how is this projected by each one's pose
and facial expression? Finally, assuming that each relief was intended
to allude to the recent victories of the Greeks over the Persians, how
would you contrast the statements that the two reliefs make about the Persian
Wars?
