First Midterm

A. Slide identification of small works and free-standing sculptures (for a maximum of 30 points). Identify the place of manufacture, if known, e.g. Attic. Next, name the technique, e.g. black-figure. Then name the medium, e.g. vase or a specific vase shape for examples in the Kilinski catalog. Then name the artist; this is required for vases in Kilinski and optional (for extra credit) for other vases. Next identify the thematic content. Finally, give the period and period dates.

C. Identification of names and terms (for a maximum of 16 points). Provide the name of each mythological character of attribute that is described.

1. _____________ The fisherman who, with his nets, pulled in the chest containing Danae and Perseus, and who was later installed by Perseus as king of Seriphos.

2. _____________ The attribute that Ariadne is often shown holding. After slaying the Minotaur, Theseus followed this to find his way out of the Labyrinth.

4. _____________ The receptacle in which Perseus inserted the head of the Gorgon Medusa, to prevent it from petrifying him.

5. _____________ The father of Circe, who may be depicted on the back of a calyx crater by the Persephone Painter.

6. _____________ The method by which Heracles killed the Nemean lion, according to ancient literary sources.

7. _____________ The way in which the sea was indicated in depictions of Europas journey on the back of the bull; the archaic metope from temple Y at Selinus includes this motif.

8. _____________ The mother of Actaeon, who is depicted on an Apulian red-figure situla showing Actaeons transformation.

<>Describe all the characters who are visible in these two views; indicate who these characters are, what their attributes are (including distinctive items of dress), and specify what they are doing. How do the two representations differ in narrative content (including the spectator figures), and in the moment of the story that is depicted in each case? Next, compare and contrast the two heroes, as well as the two monsters. How are the heroes and monsters similar and/or different in their poses, and in the treatment of their bodies and heads? Which representation do you find to be more heroic, and why have you arrived at this conclusion?

Second Midterm

A.  Slide identification of Roman and Medieval works (for a maximum of 48 points).  Identify the place of origin, if known, e.g. from house at Pompeii.  For extra credit, give additional information on names of structures and rooms within structures where works were found.  Next, name the medium, e.g. wall painting or ivory casket.  Next, briefly identify the thematic content (it is not necessary for this part of the test to name all the subsidiary characters or attributes).  Finally, give the period and period dates.  For Medieval works for which a specific period is named on the study guide, indicate that a work is both Medieval and give the specific period within Medieval, such as Byzantine.

Then continue your answer, writing your response on back pages if need be.  First, elucidate the whole narrative content of each image; describe any indications of setting in each work, and identify all the characters and their attributes, and explain all their activities.  In the case of the principal female character, describe her dress or lack of it.  What common thematic elements are in both representations, and how are the two depictions similar in their compositions?  Is there a consistent mood in each representation, and what has led you to your conclusion?  Finally, which depiction do you feel more effectively conveys the story, and what has led you to your judgment?

A.  Slide identification (for a maximum of 48 points).
Give the theme of each work.  Then identify the artist (last name only is sufficient).  For book illustrations, give the name of the author of the text (both for extra credit).  Then give the medium (such as engraving or bronze sculpture).  Then provide the name of the period and style (if required) and the dates of the period.  For extra credit, give the name of the patron who commissioned each work (if known).

First describe the two main characters in both depictions, noting their actions and attributes.  Is there a difference in the moment of the story that is depicted in the two paintings?  Then describe all the additional characters who are present, including any animals, and discuss the landscape setting of each depiction.  Either during your discussion of narrative content or as an addendum to it, indicate how consistent each depiction is with Ovid’s account of the story (consult the printout from Book 3 of the Metamorphoses that you have been given).  Based on what is happening to the intruder and the responses of the female characters to the intruder, would you say that one artist has a different message about the myth than the other one?  If so, how would characterize this difference?
