of dedication for a victory in chariot race of 478 or 474 B.C. Inscription from base (from J. Boardman, Greek Sculpture: The Classical Period, 1985, fig. 34): Polyzalos, victorious with his horses (chariot) dedicated me Son of Deinomenes, whom make prosper honored Apollo. The first line once read: Polyzalos, lord of Gela dedicated (this) memorial... which was erased, presumably because of his claim to Gela (a Greek colony in Sicily) and embarrassment over his tyranny. |
